Do yourself a favor, pass on this, but don't give up on the franchise. The animated series "Space Battleship Yamato: 2199" is superb. Period. Full stop. At best, this film is a poor rip-off of Battlestar Galactica void of any plot or character.

DESLOK: - Pretty good story for such a condensed plotline. Every scene was related to an episode from the original Star Blazers series. - The special effects were top-notch. It is hard to believe they pulled off with $23.9 million what George Lucas couldn't do with his prequels for five or six times the amount of money. Maybe Hollywood should move to Tokyo. - The musical score was taken straight from the original series and served to underscore the tie this movie had to it. PRINCE ZORDAR: - The high-gravity scenes were drawn out faaaaaar to long. I mean, it took almost 15 minutes from the final Gamilia attack to figure out a course of action. It seemed like it was just filling in the time and by the time it was over you were wanting to scream "just get on with it"! - The lead character, known as Derrick Wildstar in the west, comes aboard the ship as a civillian, tries to assault the Captain, re-enlists, then is shortly thereafter made Captain. Not even by any stretched imagination and suspension of all disbelief is this possible. - The story was too condensed. The old series took place over the course of a year, and travelled 360k light years. There were a lot of good subplots that would have served well if this had been a trilogy.

This movie was like a hodgepodge of nit picked scenes from the entire animated series and movies from the IP. It did not do it justice at all. If you're a fan of the original material from the 1970's, I highly recommend watching the rebooted anime series instead. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (series 1) & 2202 (series 2). Or Uchū Senkan Yamato 2199 & 2202 (in Japanese). You will not be disappointed.

After having watched the Anime Series (Remake) and the other Anime Movies.....i'll have to say that this Live Action Adaptation that is supposed to be based on the Series is…….BAD, REALLY BAD, and iam not in the least surprised. Trying to Squeze 77 Episodes (Original) or 26 Episodes (Remake) into a 2h Movie just cant Work. The Movie does not even Cover Maybe 5% of the Series, it Ends before it really started, so i was like - "wait, thats it? THATS ALL?!" - he Series is full with Encounters in each Episodes, full with enemys, Storys, drama, and all Kinds of stuff going on, and ALL of that is Missing in this miserable wanabe Movie Adaptation. To make it even worse, whats shown in the Movie is all Twisted, wrong and not in seen in the Anime Series at all! Characters are Missing or dont fit, WHERE are the Garmilas? WHERE are the Iscandarians? And all the other Species? characters who dont die in the Series, die here! I had to shake my head in the end, this is Pure Garbage. Also totaly cringy to see how "fast" characters become pals (like they know each other for years, even so that the journey is supposed to take one year) and Kodai and Yuki being Super in Love with each other to the Point where shes saying that she cant live without him? Ist like they just met each other! And thats again the problem with them trying to squeze 77 / 26 (Original / Remake) Episodes into one Movie, that just called for a Catastrophy. Even someone who didnt watched the Animes would probably raise his eyebrowes thinking what the hell he just watched. Better Go Watch the Remake Series and the Movies instead of Wasting your Time with this Trash.

Space Battleship Yamato is like a slow-paced, over-long Japanese version of a Battlestar Galactica episode, but more hokey, with feeble, shmalzy dialogue and soundtrack, and incredible one-guy-does-it-all plot. Protagonists regularly high-five, get all teary, apologize for necessary actions, and offer themselves up in self-sacrifice. When things are most at risk, protagonists have time for lingering good-byes. Occasional mildly stimulating special effects are insufficient to maintain interest. You do have to love the protagonist's 70s hair, but that's not enough reason to endure the entire film.

I've seen the anime, and it was very enjoyable. However, the movie removed many of the interesting elements, making the story bland. The first 20 minutes or so are pretty good, but then it becomes pretty disappointing. The characters are not developed to the point where you care about them enough during risky situations. The last 20-30 minutes or so are just cringe-worthy, to the point where I'd rather just skip to the end. Bottom line: avoid.
