The 12 Worst TV Ads Ever Made
Terrible commercials due to sexism, racism, and sheer stupidity
TV commercials aren't cheap. They are the most expensive pieces of advertising to make. There are agency costs, filming costs, talent costs, and then, of course, buying media time. So you would think a lot of thought goes into the script and the message about the brand that would be delivered. You would think.
It appears these companies below didn't think. I get a lot of comments on these articles, and many ask the same question I do when I write, how do these get approved? And I really can't answer that.
Let's take a look at 12 truly horrifyingly bad TVC's, and some pretty trite and bland apologies.
Note: I have left off the Kendall Jenner/Pepsi ad, as that has been discussed many times already. But it would probably top this list.
1. Pop Chips
Pop Chips thought getting actor Ashton Kutcher to don brown face and put on a poor Indian accent would be a great way to sell its product.
It's not funny and resulted in quick public backlash. Pop Chips spent $1.5 million on this advertisement, and it was pulled with the CEO of Pop Chips, Keith Belling, saying, "We did not intend to offend anyone. I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended."
They thought brown face wouldn't offend anyone? Really?
2. Sales Genie
The most expensive place to advertise is during the Superbowl. Media rates are over $5.25 million for a thirty-second commercial. With that kind of spend, you want to really hit the spot. On top of that, each Superbowl ad is heavily scrutinized, and the day following the Superbowl, there are ratings of the best and worst Superbowl ads.
In 2008, Sales Genie went with an advertisement that tried to fit in every racist Chinese stereotype it could in those thirty seconds.
The CEO of Sales Genie, wrote the ad himself. Already a mistake, very few CEO's are good copywriters or advertising creatives.
The pandas in the ad have horrible Chinese accents and struggle to pronounce words correctly. On top of the racism, the commercial is confusing and very cluttered, losing the key message.
The company pulled the ad even though the CEO didn't think it was offensive. "We never thought anyone would be offended. The pandas are Chinese; they don't speak German," said Vinod Gupta.
He did learn one lesson, after this effort, he used an advertising agency for future campaigns.
3. Easy-Off Bam
Let's take a moment away from racism and move to the downright annoying. I have included a clip for this one as you really need to hear it (and then somehow hope to un-hear it). When the caption is the most annoying commercial ever, you know it's going to suck.
I feel with this ad, the agency was given a few keywords they needed to mention. Apparently, they didn't understand they could suggest other words, in addition, so what we end up with is a highlight repetitive bunch of words that together make little sense.
It does remind me though of Trump's recent quiz. Person. Man. Woman. Camera. TV. Perhaps he wrote this commercial?
4. Dr. Pepper
What do you do when you want to market a low-calorie drink to men?
The team at Dr. Pepper thought you should explicitly say its not for women. And then come out with a thirty-second ad full of stereotypes. Not for women! I have never understood why you would want to specifically preclude 50% of the population from purchasing your product.
5. K-Mart
Gifs are popular. There are two essential things to note with them.
- They have no sound
- They are shared online, mainly on social platforms.
K-Mart wanted to get on the gif bandwagon but thought they would try and bring it to TV. And produce a truly terrible piece of advertising.
The first five seconds made me think something was wrong with my laptop, and the final twenty-five seconds felt like torture. And Giffing out? Are they trying to create a phrase? And the word is actually pronounced "Jif" according to the creator. Let's add a third point to the ones above: Gifs are not meant for video.
6. East Hill Mall
What do you do when you are a mall and can't afford to hire actors?
You go around the stores in your mall and ask for the people with the least amount of acting skills to star in your TVC. If they are also bad singers, then that's a bonus.
"Haircut." Now that is stuck in your head.
7. Qiaobi Detergent
Let's head over to China now to view what has been described as the most racist commercial ever made.
To save you from watching, a black man winks at a young Chinese lady at a laundromat. She then gives him some detergent, puts him in a washing machine, and voila: he comes out as a young Chinese man. You can watch pure racism below.
Their website didn't make things any better stating:
"Thanks to traditional beauty standards valuing white skin, many Chinese people have a well-established phobia of dark skin which unfortunately also breeds racist attitudes towards people of African descent, who are viewed by some as 'dirty' simply because of their skin tone."
8. Miracle Mattress
This Texas mattress company decided to leverage the tragic events of 9/11 to sell some of their mattresses. Launching their "Twin Towers" sale, the ad was an apparent parody of 9/11 and had two actors fall onto twin towers of mattresses. One actor then turned to the camera and said, "We shall never forget."
The company's Facebook page was flooded with complaints causing not only the store owners but also the actors who appeared in the commercial to apologize. While many of the big businesses above recovered, this advertisement forced the company out of business soon after. Here it is:
9. Quiznos
Ok, we get the sexual innuendo that comes with sandwiches that are six inches and a foot long. The team at Quiznos thought an oven with a Barry White voice sexually harassing an employee would be a good way to go. Using double entendre like a fourteen-year-old sees this ad fall flat.
Sex can sometimes be used to sell. But not sandwiches. This ad is just disturbing. I mean, would you buy a sub from Scott?
10. Volkswagen
Look a man camping on a cliff edge. A woman is making a sandwich. A man in space, a woman on a bench with a pram. What is wrong with this ad?
This ad was made in 2019. Yes, 2019! I guess the VW team was stuck in 1919 when they gave this advertisement the thumbs up. The United Kingdom banned this ad for depicting potentially harmful gender stereotypes. It was the first ad banned under these new regulations.
11. McDonald's
This 2017 advertisement was banned for using child bereavement to sell Filet-O-Fish burgers. As soon as the ad was shown in the UK, it was flooded with complaints, many from parents who said the commercial had upset their child.
McDonald's pulled the ad and apologized for causing upset. Did they really think a grieving child would get over the death of their father by eating a McDonald's burger? Would you like fries with your grief?
12. Hyundai
Most car ads feature sweeping aerial shots as the car takes hairpin corners along a mountainous coast. Or similar. For some reason, the geniuses behind this ad thought suicide would be a far better option to showcase the Hyundai.
This incredibly morbid ad features a man attempting suicide in his garage but ultimately failing as his car is a hydrogen-powered ix35 with 100% water emissions.
Of course, the feedback was overwhelmingly negative, forcing Hyundai to issue this statement:
"We understand that some people may have found the iX35 video offensive. We are very sorry if we have offended anyone. We have taken the video down and have no intention of using it in any of our advertising or marketing."
For me, what makes it the worst commercial on this list is that studies have found that showing suicides leads to an increase in suicides. So inadvertently that's what Hyundai was marketing.
Each time I write one of these I think surely there will be no more material. Surely marketers and advertisers will learn from so many past mistakes, but they don't. Bad for their brands but I guess good for my writing.
